The Role of the Green Valley Sahuarita Chamber of Commerce

One of the great privileges of working with a Chamber of Commerce is the opportunity to stand at the intersection of so many parts of a community.

On any given day at the Green Valley Sahuarita Chamber of Commerce, we may be speaking with a brand-new business owner preparing to open their doors, a local company celebrating a major milestone, or community leaders working together to strengthen the future of our regional economy. Every conversation is different, but they share something in common: people who care deeply about the success and vitality of the place they live and work.

That spirit of shared investment is really what a local Chamber of Commerce is about.

Most people are familiar with the visible side of Chamber life. Ribbon cuttings. Networking breakfasts. Community events that bring business owners, residents, and local leaders together in the same room. These gatherings matter because they create opportunities for people to meet one another, build relationships, and discover the many businesses that make up the fabric of a community.

But those moments are only part of the story.

Much of the work of a Chamber of Commerce supporting local businesses happens in the quieter spaces between events. It happens in introductions made between two business owners who would benefit from knowing one another. It happens in conversations about workforce development, economic growth, and how a region can support entrepreneurs and small businesses as they grow. It happens when someone calls the Chamber office looking for guidance, a recommendation, or simply a connection to the right person.

Over time, those small moments begin to weave together.

A conversation turns into a partnership.
A networking event leads to a new client relationship.
A new business becomes a trusted and long-standing member of the community.

When you step back and look at the full picture, you begin to see how a local business chamber serves as a crossroads for the community. Businesses, nonprofit organizations, civic leaders, educators, and residents all intersect in this space. The connections formed there often lead to new ideas, collaborations, and opportunities that strengthen the entire region.

In Green Valley and Sahuarita, Arizona, we are fortunate to work alongside an extraordinary group of entrepreneurs, professionals, and community partners. These are people who invest not only in their own businesses, but in the wellbeing of the entire community. They create jobs, support local initiatives, mentor the next generation of leaders, and contribute to the kind of place people are proud to call home.

Watching those efforts unfold, and having the opportunity to support them, is deeply rewarding.

It’s easy to think of a Chamber as an organization that simply hosts networking events or promotes local businesses. In reality, its role is much broader. A strong Chamber helps create an environment where businesses can succeed, where partnerships form naturally, and where community leaders can work together to support economic development and long-term regional growth.

For those of us who have the privilege of working alongside our members, this work is both meaningful and humbling.

Every ribbon cutting, every introduction, every community conversation adds another thread to the story of our region’s growth.

Supporting the businesses and people who help shape Green Valley and Sahuarita’s local economy is not just a responsibility we take seriously.

Whole Women, Strong Leaders: Creating Space for Real Conversations in Leadership

Some conversations don’t happen often enough in business.

They are running businesses, managing teams, making decisions that carry weight, and contributing to the strength and growth of our region in meaningful ways.

They are not at the beginning of the conversation around leadership. They are in the middle of it.

And in many cases, they are navigating that responsibility in real time—balancing growth, managing complexity, and moving their work forward without much pause. The pace is steady, the expectations are high, and the decisions they make have real impact.

This is the reality that shaped Whole Women, Strong Leaders.

In partnership with the Greater Vail Area Chamber of Commerce, we are bringing together a regional group of women leaders for a conversation that reflects what leadership actually looks like at this level. The intention is not to create another event built around general ideas or surface-level advice. It is to create space for a more grounded and relevant discussion—one that aligns with the work women are already doing across business, healthcare, and community leadership.

We are honored to welcome Jan Lesher as our keynote speaker. Her leadership experience brings depth and perspective to the conversation, offering insight into what it means to lead across seasons, responsibilities, and evolving challenges. She will be joined by a panel of women who are leading within their own organizations and industries, each bringing practical experience and a clear understanding of what leadership requires in practice.

This event is designed to support women who are already carrying responsibility and making decisions that matter. It is not about adding more to an already full schedule. It is about creating an opportunity to step into a room where the conversation reflects the level at which they are already operating.

Because leadership does not happen in isolation. It happens in the middle of ongoing work, competing priorities, and continued growth. And there is value in being in a space where that is understood, where insight is shared from experience, and where the conversation is both practical and relevant.

Our partnership with the Greater Vail Area Chamber reflects a shared commitment to supporting leaders across our region in ways that are meaningful and aligned with the realities of business today.

Northwest Healthcare’s GME Family Medicine and Internal Medicine Residency Programs Mentor and Coach the Next Generation of Doctors in Pima County

TUCSON, AZ (March 12, 2026) – Match Day, the celebratory occasion when graduating medical students learn which residency program they have matched with, falls on Fri., March 20 – and Northwest Healthcare is looking forward to welcoming a group of new doctors who match with our Graduate Medical Education (GME) program.

For patients, a strong local residency program is vital to short- and long-term health outcomes. For physicians (M.D.s or D.O.s) at the beginning of their careers, residency program training – led by experienced and invested faculty physicians – is vital to long-term career success.

“When I started residency, I thought I had a good idea of what being a physician required,” says former resident, Vijay Nethala, M.D. “This program quickly showed me there is always another level of growth waiting. The learning curve was real, the standards were high, and the expectations pushed me to become more thoughtful, more decisive, and more resilient.

“Along the way, I learned that medicine is truly a team sport,” Dr. Nethala continues. “My co-residents became friends, my attending physicians became mentors, and our patients became our greatest teachers. There were challenging days, humbling moments, and plenty of lessons that will stay with me for life. It shaped not only how I practice medicine, but how I lead, communicate, and care for people during their most vulnerable moments.”

Only one of every five American hospitals is accredited teaching hospital (Arizona has fewer than 10). Northwest Healthcare is proud to have not just one, but three teaching hospitals (Northwest Medical Center, Northwest Medical Center Houghton, and Oro Valley Hospital) in our system.

“Our GME program’s three divisions – Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and the Transitional Year Program – are designed to expand access to medical education and access to care for patients in Southern Arizona,” says GME Family Medicine program director Dr. Lyndsey Kramp, M.D. “We are proud to support our new cohort of resident physicians as they set and accomplish their professional goals.”

Our Internal Medicine cohort has its first graduating class this year – these graduates will be the first class to complete the entire three years of the program. Soon, the entire GME program will have 79 residents, many of whom will go on to fellowship training.

March is Women’s History Month, and women became the 50%+ majority of GME trainees in the United States during the 2024–25 academic year (women comprise roughly two-thirds of the residents at our GME program).

There’s something special about watching a community show up for its kids.

This spring, the Town of Sahuarita Parks & Recreation Department is doing exactly that. They’re inviting young artists across Sahuarita, grades K through 12, to take part in the 2026 Fiesta Sahuarita Art Design Contest. This year’s theme is “Spike Explores Sahuarita.” If you’ve seen Spike, you know him. The friendly saguaro cactus mascot who shows up at events, camps, and celebrations all year long. Now, it’s time for local students to imagine where Spike goes next.

Does he explore Anamax Park?

Does he drop by the Green Valley Sahuarita Visitor Center?
Hang out at the Sahuarita Library?
Cool off at the splash pad?
Join Camp Sahuarita or Winterfest?

The canvas is wide open, and so is the imagination.

At the Chamber, we believe strong communities are built on connections between families, schools, businesses, and local organizations. Events like this remind us that creativity is part of economic vitality. When we invest in young people, we invest in Sahuarita's future. And this isn’t just a drawing that gets pinned to a bulletin board.

Winning designs will be turned into limited-edition Spike Trading Cards that will be handed out at Fiesta Sahuarita 2026 . Even more exciting is that one design will be selected to appear in the Fiesta Sahuarita drone show , lighting up the sky above our town. Imagine seeing your artwork transformed into something that floats above thousands of neighbors.

A Community That Cheers for Its Kids

This makes Sahuarita special. Our Parks & Recreation team doesn’t just host events, they create experiences. They give kids a chance to participate, to be seen, to feel proud of something they made. As a Chamber, we’re proud to amplify opportunities like this. When families engage, when students create, when local celebrations reflect local talent, that’s community building at its best.

A Strong Start: Kicking Off a New Business Workshop Series for Chamber Members

If you’re running a business, you know this to be true: growth is exciting, but sustainability is what really matters.

This week, the Green Valley Sahuarita Chamber of Commerce hosted the first workshop in a new educational series , created in partnership with Chase Bank , to help members build businesses that last.

The session, Your Next Level Business: How to Build a Foundation That Lasts, brought local business owners together for a thoughtful, practical conversation on financial clarity, long-term decision-making, and creating systems that support both the business and its people. Rather than quick fixes or one-size-fits-all advice, the workshop offered real-world insights participants could apply immediately, whether they’re refining what they’ve already built or preparing for what’s next.

This workshop marks the beginning of an ongoing Chamber series designed to meet members where they are, offer trusted guidance, and strengthen our local business community from the inside out.

One of the many ways our Chamber members give back to the community is through meaningful programs that invest in the next generation — and Trico’s Scholarship Program is a great example.

Each year, Trico awards scholarships to students pursuing college, university, vocational school, or other post–high school education paths. In 2025 alone, the Trico Foundation awarded $570,000 in scholarships to 100 students , helping local families offset the cost of continuing education.

Pima County BOS Change Meeting Times

Supervisors to begin evening meetings in May

PIMA COUNTY, Jan. 7, 2026 - T he Pima County Board of Supervisors at its Jan. 6 meeting voted 5-0 to start meeting at 5 p.m., effective with the May 12 meeting. The Board also will start adding one study session each month, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., preceding that first meeting of the month.

The Board approved the new schedule through June 23, 2026. A schedule of meetings for July-December 2026 has not yet been approved.

Meetings will continue to be held on Tuesdays but will begin taking place the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. The Board currently meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month. The new schedule avoids conflicting with meetings of the City of Tucson Mayor and Council, which meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of the month, except when there are holiday conflicts.

The Board asked the County Administrator and Clerk of the Board to review the financial impact of evening meetings but still plans to move ahead with the schedule change.

Study sessions will be open to the public, but they will not include a Call to the Public. That will still be offered during regularly scheduled meetings. Any member of the Board can put items on the study sessions.

The change in meeting time addressed Board members’ desire to offer additional opportunities for the public to participate in meetings.

Friends of Tubac Presidio Receives Grant

Institute of Museum and Library Services Awards American Latino History Grant to Tubac Presidio

Tubac, AZ — January 2, 2026 — The Friends of the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park and Museum has been awarded a substantial American Latino History grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), marking the largest grant in the organization’s history.

Arizona’s first state park, Tubac Presidio State Historic Park and Museum, is operated by the Friends of the Tubac Presidio, a nonprofit organization working in partnership with Arizona State Parks and Trails and Santa Cruz County. The IMLS award will support a multi-year initiative to expand and deepen interpretation of Latin American histories across the park and museum.

This transformational support allows us to strengthen every facet of our work,” said Executive Director, Kendyll Collins. “With this grant, we will redesign two museum exhibits to more fully share Latin American histories, install Spanish-language signage throughout the park, enrich interpretation in the historic Rojas House, translate marketing materials, and even provide Spanish classes for our volunteers. We have tried to inch towards these goals incrementally for years. This funding allows us to realize them holistically, and we are deeply grateful to IMLS.”

Green Valley Sahuarita Chamber of Commerce Supports Regional Transportation Plan Renewal

Green Valley, AZ — The Green Valley Sahuarita Chamber of Commerce announced today that its Board of Directors has voted to support the Pima Association of Governments (PAG) / Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) Regional Transportation Plan, which will appear on the March 2026 ballot as a 20-year renewal of the existing half-cent sales tax.

The Chamber’s Board of Directors received a detailed presentation on the proposed plan and its long-term investments in regional transportation infrastructure, safety improvements, and economic mobility across Pima County, including benefits to the Green Valley and Sahuarita communities.

“Reliable transportation infrastructure is essential to a strong business environment and a thriving community,” said Rebecca Willer, Chair of the Board of Directors. “After reviewing the plan and its projected impacts, our Board voted to support the renewal as a tool to help sustain economic growth, improve safety, and address long-term transportation needs in our region.”

The Regional Transportation Plan would continue funding for roadway improvements, congestion mitigation, safety enhancements, and multi-modal transportation projects over the next two decades, without increasing the current tax rate.

The Green Valley Sahuarita Chamber of Commerce encourages its members and the broader community to review the details of the plan and participate in the March 10, 2026 election.

Northwest Medical Center Earns Level III Trauma Center Designation

TUCSON, AZ (Dec. 12, 2025) – Northwest Medical Center (NMC) announced it has been officially designated as a Level III Trauma Center by the Arizona Department of Health Services’ Bureau of Emergency Medical Services & Trauma System.

The designation recognizes NMC’s demonstrated ability to deliver advanced trauma life support and provide timely, high-quality care to injured patients. As a Level III Trauma Center, NMC is equipped to stabilize and treat patients with significant injuries and, when necessary, coordinate transfer to higher-level trauma centers for specialized care.

Achieving this designation required a comprehensive and rigorous review process. NMC invested in specialized trauma equipment, implemented enhanced clinical protocols, strengthened continuous improvement programs, and expanded trauma-related education for clinical teams.

“Earning Level III Trauma Center designation reflects the dedication, expertise, and compassion of our staff,” said Ben Ridder, CEO of Northwest Medical Center. “Their commitment to excellence ensures that patients and families in our community have access to trusted, high-quality trauma care when they need it most.”

Tubac Presidio State Historic Park Unveils New Connections Garden Celebrating Arizona’s Biodiversity and Indigenous Heritage

Tubac, AZ – December 1, 2025 – The Tubac Presidio State Historic Park and Museum invites visitors to explore over 2,000 years of Southwestern history and culture...

...now enhanced with the addition of the Connections Garden, made possible by the generous support of the Tohono

O’odham Nation.

The park, which features the acclaimed Griffin Museum, the 1752 Spanish Presidio ruins, and

three buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places—the 1885 Schoolhouse, 1893

Rojas House, and 1914 Otero Hall—offers interpretive gardens and paved paths across its 11-

acre grounds.

The Connections Garden introduces a vibrant, interactive space centered around a whimsical

mural by Derrick Gonzales, a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation, Pascua Yaqui, and Pima

Maricopa tribes. An artist, scientist, and father, Gonzales draws on his rich personal and cultural

perspective to celebrate Arizona’s biodiversity, using color, movement, and playful imagery to

highlight the intricate connections between people, land, water, and tradition.

Evoking a comic book feel, the mural positions a “superhero” figure as the child, entrusted with

maintaining a deep connection to Arizona’s unique flora and fauna while carrying forward

cultural traditions. Gonzales reflected, "I want viewers to stop, look, and listen to their

surroundings, to see this mural with fresh eyes, and think about the next generations and how we

can help one another."

The art installation is surrounded by a gently sloping landscape designed to harness natural water

flow and support native species, including saguaro, beargrass, and the “three sisters”—corn,

beans, and squash. Ecotone Biodiversity, working alongside Presidio staff and volunteers,

designed and planted the garden to create a thriving wildlife habitat that incorporates rainwater

harvesting systems and erosion solutions.

Pocket gardens throughout the space feature plants essential to native pollinators, such as

butterflies and hummingbirds, creating an immersive environment that is both educational and

enchanting. The garden stands as a living testament to the resilience, creativity, and cultural

heritage of Arizona’s Indigenous communities.

Trico Electric Cooperative Offering Member-Driven Fiber Internet Program

Trico is using a pre-subscription program to determine whether to offer fiber-to-the-home internet service to Members, and where to offer that service.

Trico Electric Cooperative (Trico) is launching a Member-Driven Fiber Internet Program to determine if Trico will start offering high-speed fiber internet service. For 80 years, Trico has been energizing their Members’ lives with cost-effective, sustainable, and reliable energy services, and now they are putting the decision on offering fiber internet service in their Members’ hands.

Trico is using a pre-subscription program to determine whether to offer fiber-to-the-home internet service to Members, and where to offer that service. If enough Members pre-subscribe, Trico will launch Trico Fiber and start offering fast, affordable, and reliable fiber internet with the same cooperative values and excellent service Trico has delivered to Southern Arizona for 80 years.

Trico’s Member-Driven Fiber program is simple:

For the past two years, Trico has been performing detailed feasibility studies to understand the financial, engineering, Member service, and other impacts of offering fiber internet services.

If our Members show enough interest, we are confident this can be a benefit for all Trico Members and the communities of Southern Arizona.” said Brian Heithoff, Trico CEO & General Manager.

Trico SmartGrid Fiber Backbone

Separate from the Member-Driven Fiber Internet Program, Trico is starting work on building the Trico SmartGrid Fiber Backbone, which will connect Trico’s electric substations and devices with high-speed, secure fiber communications.

Benefits of the Trico SmartGrid Fiber Backbone will include:

· Improved reliability

o Better coordination and communication between Trico’s electric facilities will reduce outage times and the number of outages that occur.

· Secure data transfer and protection from cyber threats.

· A smarter grid will allow Trico to better manage loads, more efficiently use existing facilities, and develop programs to better serve all Members.

Construction on the Trico SmartGrid Fiber Backbone will begin later this year and is expected to finish in fall 2026.

New initiative bridges local education and business to prepare students for high-demand careers

Sahuarita, AZ — The Green Valley Sahuarita Chamber of Commerce (GVSC), in partnership with the Greater Phoenix Chamber Foundation and the Green Valley Sahuarita Chamber Foundation , is proud to announce the launch of the Southern Arizona Pilot Program for ElevateEdAZ , a statewide initiative designed to connect students with pathways to high-wage, high-demand careers.

The program, already serving 25 schools in Maricopa County, will now expand its proven education-to-workforce model to meet the unique needs of the Sahuarita community. Through this pilot, students in Sahuarita Unified School District will gain increased access to internships, industry guest speakers, career exploration, and dual enrollment opportunities, all while ensuring alignment with the needs of our local economy.

“Bringing ElevateEdAZ to Sahuarita is more than just a new program, it’s a game changer for our entire community,” said Randy Graf , President & CEO of the GVSC. “This is about building bridges between our schools and local businesses, giving our students real opportunities to explore careers right here at home. We’re not just preparing students for jobs, we’re investing in the next generation of leaders, innovators, and neighbors who will shape the future of Sahuarita and Green Valley.”

The pilot will launch at Walden Grove High School and Sahuarita High School , serving approximately 2,300 students. ElevateEdAZ will provide on-campus college and career coaching, while GVSC will lead business engagement and partnerships to ensure the program reflects the realities and opportunities of the Southern Arizona workforce.

The initiative is designed to:

Expand Career Pathways: Increase student participation in high-wage, high-demand Career and Technical Education programs.
Enhance Credentials and Credit: Help students earn industry-recognized credentials and early post-secondary credit.
Connect Education to Industry: Create real-world learning through internships, job shadows, and work-based experiences.
Strengthen Arizona’s Workforce: Build a robust talent pipeline that attracts and retains industries offering high-quality jobs.
Foster Collaboration: Unite educators, business leaders, and community stakeholders for long-term economic impact.

The Greater Phoenix Chamber Foundation will hire two college and career coaches and a regional director to lead the pilot, while the Green Valley/Sahuarita Chamber Foundation will fund a Business Partnership Liaison to strengthen local business connections.

We’re thrilled to announce a powerful new initiative that will strengthen our region’s economy, support our students, and create lasting connections between education and industry.

The Green Valley Sahuarita Chamber of Commerce and the Green Valley Sahuarita Chamber Foundation, in partnership with ElevateEdAZ and Sahuarita Unified School District , are proud to launch the first rural expansion of ElevateEdAZ’s proven career-connected learning model. This initiative has already transformed 27 schools in Maricopa County—and beginning in the 2025–2026 school year, it’s coming here to Southern Arizona.

This new workforce development program will connect local employers with Sahuarita and Walden Grove High Schools to create real-world learning opportunities for students. From job shadows and internships to career panels and site visits, this effort is about building a bridge between today’s classrooms and tomorrow’s workforce.

ADOT seeks public input on Sonoran Corridor in Pima County

TUCSON – The Arizona Department of Transportation is seeking public input as it begins an engineering and environmental study of the Sonoran Corridor, a proposed freeway in the Tucson region that would connect Interstates 19 and 10, south of Tucson International Airport.

ADOT has formally initiated a Tier 2 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Sonoran Corridor. The Notice of Intent to prepare a Tier 2 EIS is currently available on the study website at azdot.gov/SonoranCorridor .

The study will evaluate potential build alternatives for the Sonoran Corridor alignment, interchange locations and other features, as well as a no-build – or do nothing – alternative. The study will ultimately identify a selected alternative based on public, agency and tribal government input and technical analyses.

During the current study phase, ADOT is seeking public input on the project’s preliminary purpose and need, preliminary range of alternatives for the freeway alignment and other considerations to be evaluated in the study. ADOT will hold public meetings in June to provide an overview of the study and seek input on a preliminary range of alternatives for the highway alignment and the project’s purpose and need. The public comment period lasts through July 18.

Two public meetings are scheduled:

An in-person meeting from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 17, at Sahuarita Unified School District Auditorium, 350 W. Sahuarita Road, Sahuarita. A presentation will begin at 6 p.m.
A virtual public meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 18. Visit azdot.gov/SonoranCorridor for virtual meeting sign-in details.

The same information will be presented at each meeting. Meeting presentations and materials will be posted to the study website for those unable to attend.

The corridor, also known as State Route 410, is under study to: improve vehicle mobility and the transportation system, improve access to existing and future activity centers, reduce persistent traffic backups and road congestion, address existing and future high-growth areas, improve and shorten east-west freight movement to and from Mexico and southern Arizona, add a faster connection to Tucson International Airport and shorten east-west freight movement between southern Arizona and Mexico.

Ultimately the study will:

Refine the purpose and need of the proposed project
Develop and evaluate a range of 400-foot-wide freeway alignment alternatives within the 2,000-foot corridor, including a “no-build” alternative
Evaluate environmental considerations and proposed mitigation
Develop design concepts and features, such as interchange locations and bridges
Provide opportunities for public and stakeholder input throughout the process
Select a preferred freeway alternative, which would include the alignment, interchange locations and other design features

Trico Electric Cooperative Applies for Arizona’s Broadband Equity, Access & Development (BEAD) Grant Program

Trico Electric Cooperative (Trico) has applied for a grant from Arizona’s Broadband Equity, Access & Deployment (BEAD) Program, which represents the state’s largest broadband investment in history. The BEAD program is managed by the Arizona Commerce Authority with the goal of providing universal broadband internet access for all in Arizona.

Over the past 18 months, Trico’s Board of Directors and Staff have completed a detailed feasibility study to understand the financial, operational, and technical requirements for offering broadband. The Board has approved proceeding with a BEAD application and planning for providing broadband. The final decision on whether to proceed with offering broadband services will be made after BEAD awards are announced, which is expected to occur in early Summer 2025.

The BEAD Program prioritizes extending broadband internet service to the unserved and underserved areas of Arizona, including many rural areas. The goal is to improve connectivity, support economic growth, enhance education, and improve healthcare access throughout the state. As an electric cooperative that has been serving underserved and rural communities of Southern Arizona since 1945, Trico is uniquely qualified to provide this service.

On March 7th, Trico submitted an application for BEAD grant funds to support the design and construction of fiber infrastructure that would allow Trico to provide broadband internet service to the residents of Southern Arizona. Trico’s extensive utility experience and not-for-profit cooperative model make it an ideal candidate to provide fast, reliable, and affordable internet solutions with a focus on excellent service. Trico is already working on a plan to expand fiber facilities in its electric service territory to support better communication and control between Trico substations and line devices, and to implement smart-grid solutions that will provide improved reliability, allow for better integration of distributed energy resources, and support energy solutions offered to Trico Members.

Trico is taking practical steps to be prepared if it does earn a BEAD award. One of these steps is identifying public and Member interest in receiving broadband internet service from Trico. Members can visit www.trico.coop or login to their Trico SmartHub accounts to register their interest. This will help Trico to better understand which communities are the most interested in broadband service, collect a list of interested Members who want to stay informed, and plan Trico’s fiber build out.

“Almost 80 years ago, Trico was established to provide essential electric services. As we have grown, developed, and innovated over the years, we have never lost sight of that important duty. Today, high speed, reliable, and affordable broadband service is a vital utility that promotes economic progress, education, and healthcare” said CEO and General Manager, Brian Heithoff.

Cancer Survivors and Caregivers to be Honored, March 29th at the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life.

The Green Valley/Sahuarita Event Leadership Committee is inviting all cancer survivors to be honored at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, walk. This is being held at the Rancho Resort Park, 15900 S. Rancho Resort Blvd, on March 29th, 2025, beginning at 11: 00 a.m. A Survivor/Caregiver social will be at noon. Family and friends are invited to join the walk at any time in celebration of More Cancer Survivor Birthdays. Survivors and others should register online now by going to www.relayforlife.org/gvsahuaritaaz.com .

There is no fee to register or attend. Donations will go to the American Cancer Society to fund patient programs and cancer researchers. The University of Arizona receives research grants yearly.

Many teams of caring individuals will walk laps for support. Raffle prizes, games, prizes, food, music and entertainment will be held throughout the day. As the day ends, the luminaria bags are lit, (these are decorated by supporters in memory of or in support of loved ones affected by cancer), the bags are placed all around the track, as the group listens to the names of those who have been touched by cancer or list their cancer battle. A very moving event.

HUDBAY Receives Air Quality Permit

Hudbay Receives Air Quality Permit for Copper World Toronto, Ontario, January 2, 2025 –

Hudbay Minerals Inc. (“Hudbay” or the “Company”) (TSX, NYSE: HBM) is pleased to announce that it has received an Air Quality Permit for the Copper World project (“Copper World”) from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (“ADEQ”). The issuance of this permit is a significant milestone in the advancement of the project as it is the final major permit required for the development and operation of Copper World.

Copper World is expected to produce 85,000 tons of copper per year over an initial 20-year mine life. All amounts are in U.S. dollars, unless otherwise noted. “With the receipt of the Air Quality Permit for Copper World, we firmly believe Hudbay now has the best fully permitted copper development project in the Americas,” said Peter Kukielski, President and Chief Executive Officer. “We have completed one of the three key prerequisites in our sanctioning plan for Copper World, and we intend to advance feasibility studies and our prudent financial strategy throughout 2025 as we work toward a sanctioning decision in 2026. Copper World is expected to increase Hudbay’s consolidated annual copper production by more than 50% from current levels, and the project will be a key contributor to the domestic U.S. supply chain with our plans to produce Made-in America copper.” Mr. Kukielski added, “Today, Hudbay is the fourth largest copper producer listed on the NYSE and a majority of our institutional shareholders are based in the U.S. We look forward to continuing to grow our presence in the U.S. with our planned $1.7 billion capital investment to build Copper World.

Copper World’s Made-in-America copper cathode is expected to be sold entirely to domestic U.S. customers and would make Copper World the third largest cathode producer in the U.S. We believe Copper World will help meet the growing need for critical minerals in the U.S. related to increased manufacturing capacity, infrastructure development, increased energy independence, domestic battery supply chain needs and strengthening the nation’s security.”

In the midst of all the gifts and good times, the holiday season may also involve a higher risk of experiencing a medical emergency – including stroke (a life-threatening emergency involving disruption or blockage of blood flow to the brain). Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and the leading cause of long-term disability in the United States Early detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery.

The holiday season – from Halloween through New Year’s Day – can mean we pay less attention to our health than usual. For example, celebrations often include rich foods and alcohol – and busier social calendars that leave less time for exercise and sleep. Additional stress from party preparations; shopping for gifts; increased expenses or traveling; and many other holiday activities can affect your body. Cold weather can, too.

Taken together, all these elements can increase your blood pressure or trigger heart arrhythmias and blood clotting disorders – all of which can raise your risk of stroke.

“During this time of year, it’s important to give yourself time to sleep and relax – and to be mindful about what you eat, drink, and do. A little extra care can go a long way to reduce your odds of an unexpected visit to the ER for stroke or any other reason,” said Austin White, MSN-ED, RN, a Stroke Coordinator with Northwest Healthcare. “It’s wise to balance indulgent treats with healthy choices; make time for physical activity; connect with friends and family, and make sure you know the signs and symptoms of stroke.”

Stroke risk increases with age, but strokes can and do occur at any age, so it is vital to recognize the symptoms and get help without delay. Stroke symptoms can be remembered with the acronym F-A-S-T, which stands for:

· Face drooping

· Arm weakness on one side

· Speech difficulty/slurring

· Time to call 9-1-1

“If you or someone you’re with experiences these symptoms, take action and call 9-1-1 for an ambulance quickly,” White added. “Don’t drive to the emergency room yourself. Every second makes a difference, so even if you’re not sure that what you’re experiencing or witnessing is a stroke, get immediate evaluation and treatment by paramedics and emergency medicine technicians - who will communicate with the ER staff while they take you to the hospital. A timely diagnosis of stroke can help to save your brain function, and even your life.”

Groundbreaking Ceremony for Specially Adapted Home for Arizona Veteran

Helping a Hero in collaboration with Lennar Homes and community leaders will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the new specially adapted home designed for Army Sergeant Tanner House on October 1, 2024 at 10:00 AM. The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at Armed Forces Tribute at Parque del Rio in Sahuarita, AZ.

Born in Glendale, Arizona, Army Sergeant Tanner House grew up inspired by the military service of his family, including his grandfather, uncles, and cousins. Determined to follow in their footsteps, Tanner joined the U.S. Army at 18 as a Motor Transport Operator. He completed Airborne School and was assigned to the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), later deploying to Afghanistan with the 10th Special Forces Group in support of Operation Freedom's Sentinel.

During a resupply mission in Afghanistan, Tanner’s life took a tragic turn when a loading accident aboard a CH-47 Chinook helicopter severely crushed his lower spine. After multiple spinal surgeries and a long rehabilitation journey, he was medically discharged in 2018. His post-military journey has been marked by resilience. Though at times he faced homelessness and feelings of lost purpose, Tanner has dedicated himself to helping fellow veterans heal, taking them on outdoor adventures like camping and fishing to foster community and positive experiences.

Helping a Hero is working closely with Lennar Tucson to design a three-bedroom, two-bath wheelchair-accessible home tailored to meet Sergeant House’s mobility needs. With surgeries likely to continue and mobility becoming more challenging, this adaptive home will allow him to live independently and safely. The home will include features such as wider doorways, a roll-in shower, and other accessible spaces to ease daily life as Tanner navigates his future.

“This home is a dream come true,” said Tanner House. “It will allow me to live independently, without the constant worry of physical obstacles. It’s proof that people care and want to support veterans like me as we heal and rebuild our lives.”

"Even after difficult trials and injury, Tanner exemplifies resilience," stated Meredith Iler, founder of Helping a Hero. “By awarding these homes to deserving patriots we can express our profound gratitude to those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom and to reaffirm our commitment to supporting them by providing adapted housing to support their journey towards independence and empowerment."

This home will be the second home in Arizona by Lennar as part of the Helping a Hero 100 Homes Challenge launched by Johnny Morris, founder and lead outfitter of Bass Pro Shops. Beginning October 1, 2024, Tumacácori National Historical Park will transition to a fully cashless fee system and only accept mobile or electronic payments for entrance fees.

In addition to accepting debit and credit cards payments in-person, visitors can purchase entrance passes in advance on Recreation.gov. Visitors purchasing from Recreation.gov will have a digital pass that can be stored on a mobile device or printed out. America the Beautiful interagency annual and lifetime passes will continue to cover the cost of entry into the park and must be shown in conjunction with proper ID.

Entrance fees are an important source of revenue used to improve the visitor experience in national parks, including road and facility repairs and maintenance, trail improvements, and visitor and resource protection services. Moving to a cashless system allows parks to be better stewards of visitor dollars by reducing the amount of time park staff spend managing cash, increasing the amount of fee revenue available to support critical projects and visitor services, improving accountability and reducing risk.

Tucson Airport Authority Announces Non-Stop Flights

Tucson, Arizona – Alaska Airlines announced today new nonstop service between Tucson International Airport (TUS) and Sacramento International Airport (SMF). The seasonal service is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 6, 2025, and will operate daily through Monday, April 21, 2025.

Tucson Airport Authority (TAA) President/CEO Danette Bewley says, “The TAA has worked very hard to expand air service offerings for our community, our newest route speaks to the incredible success our airport team in attracting new service to Southern Arizona. TUS is poised for success and future growth in air service development.”

Sacramento will be one of the 6 daily peak departures on Alaska Airlines from TUS. As the airport growth trajectory continues, TUS is projected to serve nearly 4 million passengers in 2024.

In 2024, 16 Communities (Local or State Based) ran qualifying leagues or tournaments to select the team to represent their state at the Pickleball National Championships. The GVR Pickleball Team called "Drop Squad" won the state championship for Arizona!

This team is made up of women aged 50+ that play pickleball within GVR and our community. They are grateful for the dedication of their coaches and teammates that brought them through the state tournament and are very excited about representing GREEN VALLEY in Hilton Head, SC from September 11-15 as they compete for the National Championship Title!

PIMA COUNTY, May 23, 2024 – The Pima County Board of Supervisors at its May 21 meeting voted unanimously to approve an operating agreement between Pima County and the Arizona Aerospace Foundation (AAF) for the Titan Missile Museum located in Sahuarita. The operating agreement between Pima County and AAF is the final step toward Pima County becoming the official owners of the Titan Missile Museum, a process that began in November 2022.

Drive collects 1,738 jars of peanut butter to help alleviate hunger

TUCSON, AZ (April 1, 2024) – Northwest Healthcare’s commitment to helping people get well and live healthier extends far beyond the walls of our hospitals, clinics, and Urgent Care facilities. That commitment means we were proud to participate in the second annual Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive benefitting the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.

Peanut butter is a sought after item for food banks because of its high nutritional value and long shelf life. Yet, it is one of the least donated items.

“We recognize the impact hunger has on an individual’s health and wellbeing, and we want to help those in our community who are struggling with food insecurity,” said Brian Sinotte, FACHE, Market CEO of Northwest Healthcare. “An estimated 10-12% of people in Pima County are facing food insecurity. Our Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive is a great way to partner with community members to reduce hunger in our area.”

NorthWest Plays a Vital Role In Helping People Get Well and Live Healthier

TUCSON, AZ, (March 26, 2024) – Over the course of 2023, Northwest Healthcare played a vital role in helping people get well and live healthier in Southern Arizona. Our more than 845,000 patient encounters – across four hospitals, Northwest Primary & Specialty Care physician clinics, and other outpatient care sites – created a tremendous, positive impact on the communities we serve.
Patients, regardless of their ability to pay, received medically necessary (and sometimes lifesaving) care at more than 131,000 visits to our Emergency Departments in 2023. At our hospitals, patients were able to access medications and medical support devices – and patients who could not fully afford their treatments received substantial discounts (or even free care). Over just 12 months, Northwest Healthcare provided more than $112.8 million in charity and uncompensated care to the community’s most vulnerable.
“We play a dynamic role in our community around the clock, every day of the year, to help people get well and live healthier,” said Brian Sinotte, FACHE, Market CEO of Northwest Healthcare. “Our dedicated clinicians and caregivers use their skills, experience and compassion in service to the patients who count on us.”

Northwest Healthcare understands that good health depends not only on direct medical care, but on other important social factors. That’s why we financially support local charitable organizations such as Borderlands Produce Rescue, Tu Nidito, and Clinica Amistad. In addition, during our annual Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive, we collected more than 2,000 jars of nutritious nut butters for the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.

Northwest Healthcare is committed to dedicating resources to the medical services, facilities and technologies patients need and want to access – close to home. For example, last year, we added robotic-assisted bronchoscopy to our menu of services. This minimally-invasive technology allows doctors to diagnose, biopsy, and stage lung cancer in a single procedure – and mark tumors in advance of surgery – so that patients can begin appropriate, individualized treatment much more quickly.

In addition, during 2023:
• Two specially-trained urogynecologists became very busy diagnosing and treating women living with painful, troublesome pelvic floor disorders. Many of these patients have said they are now able to get back to doing the activities they love, after only brief laparoscopic surgery.
• Northwest Healthcare’s robust Structural Heart program grew to feature nine cardiologists and a cardiac surgery team.
• Northwest Medical Center Houghton earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® as an Accredited Advanced Primary Stroke Center.
• Our four fully-staffed hospital Emergency Departments, two free-standing Emergency Rooms, and five total convenient Urgent Care locations offered timely, high-level care for emergent illnesses and injuries throughout Pima County.
• We made capital improvements totaling more than $33.6 million to expand patient access to care – which means we opened brand new facilities and invested further in existing ones, including Northwest Medical Center Houghton, Northwest Medical Center Sahuarita, two Northwest Urgent Cares – and our inpatient rehabilitation and skilled nursing facilities. These additions continue to strengthen our established footprint across Southern Arizona.

Above and beyond providing healthcare services, Northwest Healthcare supported civic resources and services by paying taxes of more than $55.5 million and sustaining an employee payroll of more than $316.5 million. Our employees, in turn, infuse the Southern Arizona economy each and every time they purchase local goods and services.
Workforce development is another high priority for us. In 2023, we maintained a strong focus on the future of healthcare in the community by investing in the Graduate Medical Education program, where resident physicians hone their skills under the close supervision of experienced doctors. The first class of Internal Medicine residents arrived in 2023, and the program will add Family Medicine residents next.

Just as importantly, our relationship with the Jersey College of Nursing is designed to train and prepare nurses to care for our local communities – and, ideally, establish permanent roots here. We help new nurses achieve their personal and professional goals by offering student loan repayment assistance, as well as tuition reimbursement.

“The vital care we provide is only one part of the broad impact we have that adds up to more than $567.1 million last year,” Sinotte said. “We recognize that our services are essential to Southern Arizona, and we are committed to doing all we can to make this a healthier, better community for all.”

Trico Electric Cooperative to Rece i ve $7 M Grant for Clean Rural Microgrid Project in Arivaca

Trico is one of seven cooperatives across the country participating in a National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) consortium that was selected to receive $45 million in funding from the Department of Energy to build solar and battery microgrids in rural communities.

The benefit is expected to be around $7M to Trico Members, which Trico will use to build a solar generation and battery energy storage microgrid system in rural Southern Arizona.

To help provide reliable, cost-effective service to its Members, reduce the impacts of climate challenges, and advance clean energy in rural Arizona, Trico has developed the Clean Energy Rural Microgrid Project to serve Trico Members in Arivaca, AZ. The project will use solar generation and battery energy storage to provide increased electric reliability and sustainable energy to a traditionally disadvantaged community. Arivaca is currently served by a single power line.

Trico works hard to maintain that line and will continue to do so. This project will provide Trico with an additional means of serving our Arivaca Members and help improve reliability throughout the year, including monsoon season.

When not being used for reliability purposes, the microgrid project will provide energy and capacity for the Trico system and help Trico to reduce its loads at peak time periods. This will help reduce costs for all Trico Members and increase the amount of renewable energy on Trico’s system. “This is an excellent result for Trico’s Members and southern Arizona,” said Brian Heithoff, Trico CEO & General Manager. “We are excited about this opportunity to work with NRECA and the Department of Energy. They share Trico’s commitment to innovation and service.

Trico Electric Co-op Launches New Electric Vehicle Time-of-Use Rate for Members

Trico Electric Cooperative is proud to announce the launch of a voluntary Electric Vehicle Time-of-Use Rate (EV TOU Rate) for eligible Trico Members who have electric vehicles (EVs). This rate is designed to support the growing demand for EVs among Trico Members, reduce strain on Trico’s system during peak hours, and lower costs for Trico's overall membership.

Trico Members who sign up for the EV TOU Rate will receive up to 400kWh of energy at a forty-five percent rate reduction if they charge their EVs between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. This experimental rate is available to the first 1,000 Trico Members who sign up. Trico currently has 67 Members enrolled in the experimental rate. This experimental rate will help Trico to better understand Members' EV usage, encourage Members to charge during off-peak periods, and determine how many EVs are in Trico’s service area. This information will help Trico develop future EV programs as we work to better serve EV demand and Members' needs.

As a not-for-profit cooperative, Trico's focus is on meeting the needs of all Members and putting Members' interests first. By encouraging Members with EVs to charge during non-peak hours when energy supplies are high and costs are low, Trico can control costs and efficiently manage its distribution system, which benefits all Members, even those who do not own EVs.

"EVs offer a significant opportunity for electric cooperatives, and Trico has been planning for an increase in EV adoption. Trico is committed to providing its Members with sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions, and that means our EV strategy starts with our Members," shared Brian Heithoff, Trico CEO and General Manager.

Sabino Canyon Crawler to offer night tour on Saturdays

Starting on Saturday, June 3, 2023, the Sabino Canyon Crawler will offer a night ride at 8 p.m. on Saturdays through October at the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area.

Tickets may be purchased online at www.SabinoCanyonCrawler.com

The Crawler shuttle seats up to 56 people and, depending on demand, two shuttles will be in service for a capacity of up to 112 passengers. The shuttles will return to the Visitor Center by 9:30 p.m.

The Crawler is an emission-free, electric shuttle that provides an automated narration about the canyon during the 7.4-mile round trip through Sabino Canyon.

The Regional Partnering Center is the owner of the Sabino Canyon Crawler service and oversees its operations. Tucson Electric Power provided funding to purchase the electric vehicles and establish the Crawler service.

The Regional Partnering Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit entity that advances policies, practices and solutions to regional planning, environmental and energy challenges in Pima County.

TUCSON, AZ – (May 15, 2023) At Northwest Healthcare, the skilled, compassionate hands of physicians, nurses and other team members support the health and well-being of patients who seek us out for expert care. We are here, whenever needed, to help people get well and live healthier.

In 2022, we had 802,500 patient encounters – including 122,500 ER visits; 22,800 inpatient admissions; 44,200 surgeries; 611,300 outpatient visits; and 1,700 births.

We’re proud of the breadth and depth of our services. A few highlights:

· We opened the 52-bed Northwest Medical Center Houghton as a strategic part of our commitment to provide patients and families on Tucson’s East side with quality primary, specialty, and diagnostic care close to home.

· We partnered with Arizona Urology Specialists and others to create the new Tucson Urologic Surgery Center.

· Robotic surgical programs that raise the standard of care for general surgery, gynecology, orthopedic surgery, thoracic surgery and urology.

· A distinguished cardiovascular program, including a structural heart team and a cardiac surgery team at Northwest Medical Center.

· Cancer care – including breast; colorectal; gynecologic; and thoracic surgery.

· A robust Pulmonary program, which includes interventional pulmonology and thoracic surgery. We are able to diagnose and treat – or remove – lung tumors at a much earlier stage, which can lead to better patient outcomes.

· A comprehensive bariatric surgery program at Northwest Medical Center that continues to give patients a new outlook on life.

· The Women’s Center at Northwest supports new moms and babies, including those born early or in need of extra care. The Center recently added an AI-based maternal/fetal early warning system to monitor vital data throughout labor and delivery, so our maternity team can quickly recognize, prevent and respond to potential complications.

· Inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services at Oro Valley Hospital provide essential mental health support to the community.

· Northwest Medical Center Sahuarita celebrated two years of serving and delivering outstanding care to patients, families, and visitors. As Brett Lee, Chief Administrative Officer of NMC Sahuarita, said: “We are so proud to be able to offer a high level of services to our patients right here in their own backyard, with no need to make the long drive to Tucson.”

· Our newly opened inpatient rehabilitation facility, Northwest Transitions; and our skilled nursing unit at Oro Valley Hospital, continued to grow and thrive.

In addition to providing expanded and enhanced medical care close to home, we are proud to be a strong contributor to our local community’s economic health. By employing thousands of people, paying taxes, and using local businesses for projects, we made an overall financial impact of $613.2 million in 2022.

That number includes $65.4 million in charity and uncompensated care for the most vulnerable patients; $50.8 million in property, sales, and GRT taxes which support community resources and services; and $291.6 million in payroll.

Finally, we grew and supported our incredible team. We recruited more than 40 new physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, and continued to provide pathways to success for everyone who wears our badge. Our enhanced benefits (including student loan repayment assistance and licensure, certification, and tuition expense reimbursement) – help employees reach their personal and professional goals.

We’re also committed to doing our part to address the shortage of medical professionals in Pima County, thanks to our partnership with Jersey College of Nursing and our new Graduate Medical Education Program, which will train internal medicine and family medicine resident physicians.

FC Tucson Ownership Group Awarded USL Super League Franchise

New Professional Women’s Soccer League to begin play in August 2024

Tucson, AZ (May 16, 2023) - FC Tucson Ownership Group, led by Founder Jon Pearlman and Local Business Leader Jeff Arnold, have secured a USL Super League franchise and Tucson is among the initial markets announced today. The USL Super League intends to launch in August 2024 as a first division, and FC Tucson ownership shares the league’s commitment to highest standards in American soccer and collective vision to be a global leader in world soccer on and off the field.

The USL Super League will provide a differentiated experience that includes playing on the international calendar and operating a connected women’s pathway from youth to professional soccer. This “fall to summer” calendar, unique in American soccer, aligns the Super League with the global game and prioritizes player welfare and performance. The youth-to-pro pathway creates development and advancement opportunities for players, coaches, referees, and front office employees while uniting communities and growing the sport at all levels across the United States.

The USL will have 10 to 12 teams competing in its inaugural 2024 season. FC Tucson intends to participate in the inaugural season.

Northwest Healthcare donates 2,013 jars of Peanut Butter Thanks To Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive

TUCSON, AZ (March 28, 2023) – To help address hunger in our community, and in celebration of National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day on April 2, Northwest Healthcare is donating 2,013 jars (equaling over 50,000 ounces!) of peanut butter and other healthy nut butters to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.

Each and every jar was graciously donated by our employees, medical staff members, and volunteers during the recent Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive at all four Northwest Healthcare hospitals.

Peanut butter is one of the most requested items for food banks because it is highly nutritious and has a long shelf life. However, many American food banks report that it is one of the least donated food items.

“We know how much good nutrition impacts our overall health and well-being,” said Brian Sinotte, Market CEO of Northwest Healthcare. “Through the Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive, we are working to help fight hunger in the Tucson area. Our generous employees and volunteers really stepped up to make sure we could stock the shelves for our friends and neighbors.”

Sahuarita, Arizona, a once-sleepy ranching and agricultural community, has blossomed into a bustling suburban oasis in the heart of the Sonoran Desert. Families flock to the area for the new housing developments in master-planned communities all within a short commute to the city of Tucson, Arizona. Given the incredible growth the area has experienced in the recent decades since its beginnings in the 1820’s, Sahuarita continues to maintain the same uniqueness as its namesake. Sahuarita is transitioning from being solely a bedroom community to a town with many economic development opportunities.

This is the story of Sahuarita, told through the primary voices of the folks, and their families, who have lived there for generations. The process of gathering first and second-hand anecdotes took several years, complicated by a global pandemic. But the volunteer researchers, interviewers, and authors succeeded in documenting captivating tales and portraits of what life was like in Sahuarita, Arizona, and the surrounding area, in the late 1800’s and beyond.

This book highlights and celebrates the hardships, successes, and everyday lives of the steadfast and resourceful citizens of the Sahuarita area, long before its incorporation as a town in 1994. It explores the answers to many questions locals have had over the years such as the story behind the many boarded up buildings along Old Nogales Highway, why the “older sages” in the area still remember the WWII Prisoner of War Camp across from Bull Farms and how ranch and mine children went to school before the current school districts were established. Please enjoy this work of the heart by so many lifelong citizens of the Sahuarita area.

Operation Homefront, working with Chamber member Meritage Homes and their subcontractors, presents a mortgage free home to Army Sergeant Charles Haney and his family. This Meritage Home is in the Enclave at Entrada Del Rio in Rancho Sahuarita.

Along with executives of Operation Homefront and Meritage Homes, Mayor Tom Murphy and Rancho Sahuarita's Jeremy Sharpe were on hand to say a few words.

Since Operation Homefront's Permanent Homes for Veterans program began in 2012, over 700 families have entered the PHV program. Scrap aluminum brings in $600 for kids projects

When it rains, or in this case hails, it pours. And if TJ Vandiver is involved, it’s pouring goodwill.

After a major hail storm pummeled Green Valley in mid-July, the owner of TJ Vandiver Construction was busy replacing damaged skylight domes.

“There was a lot of damage,” said Vandiver. “Probably millions and millions of dollars’ worth across Green Valley. Some of the roofs were just shredded.”

He called in his buddy, Green Valley resident Francis Howe, to help him cut down skylights too big to fit in the replacement area. Vandiver noticed Howe was collecting the aluminum shavings and asked him what he was doing with them.

Turns out, Howe, 87, was selling the leftover aluminum to a scrapyard. He would then give the money to the Valle Verde Rotary Club to donate to local schools and children’s projects around town. Howe is also a member of that Rotary club.

So, Vandiver offered all of the leftover frames from the replacements to do the same. Howe ended up with 130 frames, which translated to nearly $600 to benefit area youngsters.

“It had a big effect because it’s kids and schools that need different things, and TJ was very generous in doing that,” Howe said. “When I told him what I would use that aluminum money for, he jumped right on that.”

Vandiver said he plans on making the aluminum donation a regular thing. “It’s the right thing to do,” he said.

Local roofer gives new roof to esteemed community member

Longtime local and well-respected roofer TJ Vandiver says Green Valley has been good to him and he wants to pay it forward.

The owner of TJ Vandiver Construction is working on a installing a brand-new roof, free of charge, for Green Valley residents Carlos and Betty Olson – but not because they can’t afford to pay for one themselves. The Olsons have been paying customers of Vandiver’s for several years.

Vandiver is doing the estimated $6,000 roof overhaul at no cost just because Carlos is a really good guy, neighbor and community member.

“This is just a great opportunity to give to somebody in the community that gives a lot of himself in Continental Vistas by helping everybody there,” said Vandiver. “Over the years we’ve done repair work on it here and there, but he’s never wanted to do the whole roof. So, I decided we’d give him one.”

The Olson’s, both 83, hail from Minnesota and have been Green Valley residents for 25 years. They currently reside on Pairaiso Place in Continental Vistas. Carlos is retired from IBM and Betty from JC Penny.

Carlos said they contribute to service-focused organizations such as the local food bank, White Elephant and Friends in Deed. However, most of their volunteer work and donations are aimed at Desert Hills Lutheran Church where they’ve been loyal members for two decades.

“I hear a lot of good things about Carlos from my customers,” said Vandiver. “I don’t look at this as a freebie. I look at this as a payback for what he does for his community.”

Carlos is also quick to offer a helping hand with a repair project when he can, or recommend someone else he knows who will do an excellent job for his friends and neighbors.

“If I can help them fix it, I do,” said Carlos. “Having lived in the area for so long I’ve dealt with plumbers and electricians and roofers - you name it. And, when somebody comes and does work for me and treats me fairly, then I recommend them.”

Vandiver is one of those services Carlos highly endorses to others. Vandiver has a solid reputation in Green Valley for being honest and getting the job done right. Carlos is well acquainted with TJ’s solid work ethic and said he’s referred him to many people.

“TJ always does a good job,” said Carlos.

But, Carlos isn’t just the referral guy. He’s also the go-to guy when snowbirds need someone to keep an eye on their seasonal homes.

“He’s known as the Mayor of Pairaiso Place,” said Mike Hanson, a part-time Green Valley resident who returns to Duluth, MN in the summer months. “He takes care of all the houses while we’re away.”

Hence, Vandiver and his crew (Andre Craig and William Bullers) are taking care of the Olson’s house, or at least their roof, with Vandiver’s trustworthy three-coat, eight-step process using high-quality products from Tucson Rubberized Coatings.

Business groups oppose the "Inflation Reduction Act".

This Coalition letter was sent to the Members of the United States Senate, with 253 state and local chambers of commerce (including the Green Valley Sahuarita Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center) and national trade associations, opposing the Inflation Reduction Act.

To the Members of the United States Congress:

The undersigned chambers of commerce and business organizations from across the United States urge you to oppose the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. This legislation includes taxes that would discourage investment and undermine economic growth and price controls that would limit American innovation. Despite the name of the bill, independent analysis confirms that it would have little to no impact on inflation and may in fact increase inflationary pressure in the near-term.

While we understand that various elements of the legislation are being updated, we continue to believe that the following provisions make this legislation unworkable:

Enacting the proposed Corporate Book Minimum Tax would be the antithesis of sound tax policy and administration. Its introduction would be neither simple nor administrable and would pose a competitive disadvantage to U.S.-headquartered businesses while increasing the incidence of unrelieved double taxation. It would also have a detrimental effect on the quality of financial reporting.
The excise tax on stock buybacks would only distort the efficient movement of capital to where it can be put to best use and diminish the value of Americans’ retirement savings.
New price controls on pharmaceuticals would significantly reduce private sector investment in new research. Not only would this provision reduce jobs and hurt the economy, but the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office predicts that it will stifle the introduction of 15 new drugs over the next 30 years.

This is the absolute wrong time to increase taxes on American job creators or implement price controls on American innovators. We urge Congress to reject this misguided legislative package.

Road Repair and Preservation Program Camino de la Canoa From Whitehouse Canyon Road to north of Placita Agua de Pedregal

Pima County, Ariz. (May 20) –

On Wednesday, May 25, through Friday, June 3, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Pima County Department of Transportation and its contractor, KE&G Construction, Inc., will begin paving operations on Camino de la Canoa from Whitehouse Canyon Road to Placita Agua de Pedregal as part of Pima County’s Road Repair and Preservation Program.

The work consists of setting traffic control, lowering utilities, milling and repaving, and temporary striping. Thermo striping is scheduled for a later date.

Flaggers will be on site during regular work hours to direct, monitor and control traffic movements through the construction zone. Please approach the area with caution and obey all traffic control devices. Minor delays may occur during this work.

Though the pandemic forced cancelations of the official ceremonies for a couple of years, Harry and his daughter, Stephanie Peterson, attended the gala in Phoenix recently to receive their award!

Native Gardens of Green Valley is a plant nursery and garden center that sells only the healthiest and most beautiful plants that will flourish in our local climate. The nursery also boasts a retail gallery featuring handcrafted gifts from around the world, as well as home decor and jewelry.

The Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry is applauding Gov. Doug Ducey for dramatically improving Arizona’s tax code by signing into law HB 2822, a bill passed with bipartisan support that simplifies the state’s business personal property tax law.

The legislation was a top tax policy priority for the Chamber in 2022.

“Compliance with business personal property tax is notoriously cumbersome, especially for the state’s small businesses who don’t have an army of accountants behind them to navigate the Arizona Department of Revenue’s 76-page manual of instructions that explains how to value everything from farm equipment to laptops.”

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Jeff Weninger, R-Chandler, sets the valuation factor at 2.5% for business personal property acquired in tax year 2022 and beyond in taxation classes 1, 2, and 6. These classes include commercial & industrial uses, agriculture, and non-profits.

“Business personal property tax is a form of double taxation,” Seiden said. “Businesses pay sales tax at the time of purchase but remain on the hook to the taxman throughout the life of the equipment. We thank Rep. Weninger for his leadership in introducing legislation that improves the tax climate for businesses of all sizes and for encouraging greater capital investment. On behalf of Arizona job creators, the Chamber extends its appreciation to members of both parties who came together to adopt this wise policy.”

The Arizona Chamber is the state’s most consistent advocate for pro-economic-growth tax policy, having successfully led efforts to improve the state and federal individual and corporate income tax codes, and the corporate property tax assessment ratio.

The four-year construction work plan includes: 1. Connecting 4,120 new homes and businesses. 2. Increasing service capacity to many existing Members. 3. Increasing the capacity of 49 miles of existing overhead and underground distribution lines. 4. Constructing almost 34 miles of new lines between substations (this allows us to route power from different directions to reduce and limit outages). 5. Replacing 440 older distribution poles. 6. Replacing almost 15 miles of aging underground conductor. 7. Installing one new substation delivery point (Adonis Substation, which will be north of Tangerine Road and east of I-10 in Marana) and rebuilding/upgrading two existing substations (Green Valley Substation and Marana Substation) 8. Trico Electric Co-op Awards POWER Grants to Seven Local Non-Profits

Trico Electric Cooperative has awarded a total of $35,000 to seven non-profit organizations providing critical services in southern Arizona. The grants are part of Trico’s POWER Grants program and are awarded twice a year to charities throughout southern Arizona.

Nonprofits are selected through an application process and reviewed by a seven-person committee made up of Trico employees, employee-members, and Board Members.

Receiving a grant of $8,500 was Arivaca Helping Hearts. Receiving a grant of $7,400 was the Arizona Burn Foundation. Receiving grants of $5,000 each were the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and Literacy Connects. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson received a $4,000 grant. Receiving a grant of $3,600 was The Human-Animal Connection, while a grant of $1,500 was awarded to the Altar Valley Conservation Alliance.
